So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as we show you the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They drop in value the farther they deviate from the natural color.

Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when you value gemstone. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut will be muted or washed out. The color hue, color tone and saturation will be inconsistent.

A third consideration is the gemstone's clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone with no internal conclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each stone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Tips On jewelry loose diamonds

The sapphire does share a lot in common with its' ruby relative, but there are
some differences. First of all, the sapphire is must more widespread and more
accessible. This is because sapphires originate in the earth's upper crust. The
second difference is that it is blue and some natural processes have to occur
that are a little different from rubies for a change in color. In some cases,
however, early natural metamorphisms are identical to the ruby. They both come
from the family of corundums, and share the same attributes of light refraction,
density and hardness. Both stones are derived from the same chemical
crystallization of alumina.

Since 1892, Sapphires have been mined at Gem Peak area on Rock Creek near
Philipsburg, Montana. The first load of sapphires is shipped from Placer mines
and eventually as far away as Switzerland for watch jewels and fine instrument
bearings. Here was a world-class discovery and supply to meet a growing demand
for corundum; sapphires and rubies. That Rock Creek deposit was known early on
as being exceedingly abundant, and is notable as the only placer concentration
plentiful enough to have been worked commercially for sapphires. Since those
early days, and continuing into modern times, Montanans and visitors have
enjoyed mining gemstones for fine jewellery. Colours range from the classic "
cornflower blue" to "red-orange" and "mint green." The sapphires found and
finished here have a character and beauty all their own.

Johannes Nicholas de Beer and Diederik Arnoldus de Beer had diamonds discovered
on their property. They were in no position to protect the property from diamond
hunters and predators so they sold it for 6300 pounds to investors Cecil Rhodes
and Charles Rudd. Two mines were actually found on the property located in the
Kimberly region. One mine was named after the original owners of the property,
and the other one was named after the area. The De Beers and Kimberly mines were
consequently born. Rhodes and Rudd merged the two enterprises to form De Beers
Consolidated Mines Limited. It couldn't have happened at a better time.

So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many people love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to buy.

The first item to look at should be the color of the stone. You'll want the stone that is as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut showcases the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to consider how evenly it reflects light over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Gemstone clarity is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A flawless gemstone is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the difference of relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Agate, Topaz or Iolite for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet.
