Gemstones will have a higher value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they move away from the spectral color.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to look at. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Our next consideration is the aspect of clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.

The next factors to consider our size and weight. Other than the corals and pearls gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. You should know however that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones.
