Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by or to other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we reveal the different aspects of this hobby.

The first step in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will make you an informed buyer.

The first item to look at will be gemstone color. You'll want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. The spectral colors are orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices for very pale or very dark stones are less per carat.

The cut of a stone is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase. How precise the cut is will determine how much light the stone will reflect. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

The clarity of a gemstone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously worth more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or look in the garnet fields in Harts Range in the Northern Territory of Australia.

In nature, diamonds can also occur in shades of red, pink, blue, green and deep
yellow - These are called "Fancy diamonds". In the United States and around the
world colorless diamonds are graded on an alphabetical scale, introduced by the
Gemological Institute of America (GIA). "Colorless" or "rare white" diamonds are
of color grades D, E and F. Diamonds of color grade D are very rare, and
extremely valuable.

Some cultures believed Ruby's blood-like color would protect the wearer from
injury. In fact, ancient Burmese warriors believed that when a Ruby was inserted
beneath the skin it generated a mystical force, making them unconquerable in
battle.

Many gemstones will undergo some kind of treatment between the time they are
mined and the time they reach you. These treatments are carried out in order to
improve the appearance of the stone (color or clarity). Treatments include
exposure to very high temperatures, irradiation, heat or irradiation combined
with another chemical (e.g. titanium), oiling, and waxing. Treated gemstones
are not considered less valuable as long as the treatment is considered
permanent by relevant gemological organizations. That means that the
treatment will not wear off with time. In some kinds of gemstones, treatments
are so common that it is nearly impossible to find an untreated one. Rubies are
an example of this. Other gemstones could not exist without treatments, e.g.
Mystic topaz.
