So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many people love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first thing you need to do is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to buy.

The first item to look at should be the color of the stone. You'll want the stone that is as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut showcases the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to consider how evenly it reflects light over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Gemstone clarity is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A flawless gemstone is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the difference of relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Agate, Topaz or Iolite for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet.

household chemicals. Brown Zicon is usually heat treated to change them to
