The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting this gemstone hobby.

The first thing you need to do in beginning this hobby the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will make you an informed buyer.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the spectral color.

How a gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase. How precise the cut is is the factor which determines how much light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Next up is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Normally large flaws are visible to the unaided eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size criteria because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference of specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and also rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

Everything changed in the "diamond world" when diamond stones started being
discovered outside of India. First, there was Borneo and then somewhere along
the line Brazil and China joined the fray. Then the glittering light of the
diamond appeared in South Africa. It happened in the 19th century. The first
known South African diamond was picked up on a beach on the African coast by a
boy who was walking through the sand. This event precipitated a new "diamond
rush" with its roots in that part of the world.
